A Harry Potter musing

During the Quidditch World Cup in GoF, Krum captures the snitch. While this gives his team 150 points, they still lose because Ireland's lead is bigger. Why did Krum catch the snitch? Why didn't he just try and keep Ireland's seeker from catching the snitch? If he'd waited it out, Bulgaria could have won.
