“Do you still talk to Ferris?”
Cameron nodded at the very perky woman asking the question and sipped his drink. “Yeah, all the time.” He decided to omit the part where he and Ferris not only talked, but also lived together and had sex. He really had no memories of Chrissy from high school, but she seemed nice enough, and he didn’t want to ruin her little happy bubble at their ten-year reunion. “He’s a lawyer.”
Chrissy gave a pleasant little laugh. “Oh, of course he is. I always figured he’d do something where he could use his charm.”
~Well, he does me.~ Cameron kept that thought to himself and nodded again. “Well, you know Ferris; it’s about charm and cash. He’s got a lot of both, now.”
“I don’t doubt it.” Chrissy touched Cameron’s arm. “So, what have you been doing, Cameron?”
“I’m writing. I’m shopping around a book about three teenagers who take a day off from school and go into Chicago.” Cameron smiled. “It’s a bit autobiographical.”
“Oh, really? Which part?”
“Well, there’s a very pretty redhead in it.” He gave her a smile he had learned from Ferris and watched as Chrissy blushed. “And a very cool red car.” He didn’t add that there was also a protagonist that got the living shit kicked out of him at the end of the book for wrecking the very cool red car.
“Any chance it’ll get published soon?”
“It’s hard to say. I just shipped it out a couple of weeks ago. Publishing takes time.”
“Well, I’ll keep an eye out for it.” Chrissy saw something-or more likely, someone-over Cameron’s shoulder and waved. “Excuse me, Cameron.”
“Sure.” Cameron stepped aside and watched her run over and hug a woman in a green dress.
“Having fun?” Ferris seemed to materialize from nowhere to end up at Cameron’s elbow.
“A little, actually.” Cameron looked at Ferris and jerked his head towards Chrissy. “I don’t even remember her, but she remembered my name.”
“Yeah?” Ferris looked pleased at that. “What’d you talk about?”
“You, to start, but then she asked about me, and I told her about the book.”
“Cool.” Ferris put his hand on Cameron’s shoulder and squeezed gentley. “So, you’re in a good mood?”
“Yeah,” Cameron’s eyes narrowed. He knew that look on Ferris’s face. “What’s up?”
Ferris, in his usual blunt way, came straight out with it. “Rooney’s over in the corner. He’s been staring at you all night.”
And just like that, Cameron was eighteen again. He remembered the way Rooney used to look at him. Remembered the way he had touched him. Remembered the way he’d pictured Rooney’s body going through the back of his garage with that goddamned car in his dreams for a couple of years before the therapy actually started helping him.
“Cam,” Ferris’s hand tightened on Cameron’s shoulder, “you okay?”
“I…” Cameron stopped to consider whether he *was* okay. His therapist had taught him to actually *consider* the question before he answered one way or another. It had amazed him how much more in control he had felt-and still felt, sometimes-when he took that moment to decide. “I want to punch him.”
“Natural reaction.”
“But I think I’d rather ignore him.” Cameron shook off the gloom that was trying to settle around him. “There’s no point in talking to him.” Ferris was suddenly fidgety beside him, and Cameron gave him a hard look. “What did you do?”
“Nothing.”
“Ferris, what did you do?”
“I may have kicked him in the shins. And told him to stop looking at you.”
Cameron squeezed his eyes shut. “Ferris!”
“Hey, I have control issues. You’ve always told me so!”
“You’re also a possessive bastard, sometimes.” Cameron shook his head and hooked his arm around Ferris’s shoulders. “Have you spiked the punch, yet?”
“Yeah, why?”
“Because I don’t think soda’s going to cover it, now.” Cameron turned Ferris towards the refreshment table. “Come on, let’s start getting me drunk.”
Ferris grinned and turned into Cameron for a brief moment. “This is going to be a great night, Cam, trust me.”
“You know, every time you say that, we wreck a car.”
“Well, we can’t break with tradition.”
Cameron laughed as Ferris scooped a glass of punch for him. “I suppose not.”
