Roy’s a natural flirt. If it’s humanoid, legally allowed, and wants to flirt back, Roy can spend an entire night laughing, touching, and buying drinks. The first few weeks of dating him, Hal spends a lot of time scowling.

“Oh, get that look off your face,” Dinah says, pushing against his shoulder.

Hal watches Roy lean against a young guy in an open collar shirt. “He knows I can see him, right?”

“That’s the point.” Dinah takes a drink of her beer. “He wants to push your buttons.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s fun.”

Hal watches Roy slide down the bar and smile at a woman in a pantsuit. Hal reads the expression on her face. She thinks Roy worthy of a night of slumming. “How is this fun?”

“It gets you riled up.” Dinah grins. “Come on, be honest. Do you want to punch him or claim him?”

“Can’t it be both?” Hal glares when Dinah laughs. “You’re not helping.”

“Oh, relax. He’s coming back to you at the end of the night, and he’s making sure you want him.”

“I want him anyway. He doesn’t have to do,” Hal waves a hand in Roy’s direction, “this.”

“Who says he’s doing this for you?” Dinah props her chin in her hand and gives Hal a reassuring smile. “Given the kinks he probably has—and please don’t fill me in, for the love of god—is this one so bad?”

Hal thinks about some of Roy’s other kinks. “This is worse, probably.”

Dinah laughs again. “How is this worse?”

“I’m an active participant with the other kinks.” Hal narrows his eyes when Dinah shakes her head. “What? What am I missing?”

“Look at the way he’s standing, Hal.”

Hal looks at the bar again. Roy’s still talking to the woman in the pantsuit. He’s standing with his back against the bar, his chest on display in the black T-shirt he’s wearing. He says something to make the woman laugh, then glances across the room and makes eye contact with Hal.

“Ah,” Hal says.

“Are you always this thick?” Dinah asks with a grin.

“Probably,” Hal admits. He takes a long drink from his beer and stands up. “I’m gonna go actively participate.”

“Good. Leave your jacket.” Dinah makes a ‘gimmie’ motion with her hands when Hal just stares at her. “Just trust me. You look more dashing in just the shirt and pants.”

“All right,” Hal says slowly, but he unzips his jacket and hands it to Dinah. He glances down at himself, not quite sure what’s so dashing about a green button down shirt and his jeans. “Back in a minute.”

“I think I can handle myself.”

Hal grins as he cuts across the floor to Roy. “I don’t doubt that at all.”

“So, what is it you do?” The woman in the pantsuit is asking as Hal slides up beside Roy.

“This and that,” Roy answers casually. He looks at Hal and smiles. “Hey.”

“Hey.” Hal takes Roy’s beer and takes a drink. He nods as he hands back the bottle. “English?”

“German.”

“You may sway me to the international list if you keep drinking those.”

Roy takes his own drink, tongue flickering against the lip of the bottle. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

“Excuse me,” the woman in the pantsuit is glaring at Hal. “Is there something you needed?”

Hal smiles at her. “Just saying hello.” He brushes imaginary lint off Roy’s shoulder, his fingertips skimming Roy’s neck, thumb bumping Roy’s earring. “Order me one of those, will you?”

“Sure,” Roy agrees. He finishes his beer. “Or I could just pick up a six and meet you.”

“Guess that could work.” Hal reaches for his wallet. “I’ll settle the tab.”

“I’ll give my regards to Dinah.” Roy smiles at the woman in the pantsuit. “Maybe another night.”

“Sure,” she says sourly.

Hal watches Roy stride across the room towards Dinah. He nods to the woman in the pantsuit. “Going to have another?”

“I am now,” she says pointedly.

Hal pulls a twenty out of his wallet and places it next to her wine glass. “Consolation prize.”

Her eyebrows arch. “There’s still time for him to get distracted. What says he’ll actually go home with you?”

Hal doesn’t say anything as he pays out to the bartender and drops a tip on the bar. He leans near the woman and smirks. “Last night.”

Her face pinches. “Thanks for the drink.” There’s acid in her tone.

“My pleasure.”

Dinah’s holding out his jacket when he gets back to the table. “Roy says he’ll meet you at his place once he buys something with umlauts.”

“Thanks.” Hal slips on his jacket. “I’ll walk you to your bike.”

“Always the gentleman.”

Hal grins. “Not always, anymore.”

Dinah grins in return. “Fun, isn’t it?”

“It has its moments.”
