Comic Dork Sunday: Green Lantern Corps, Bitches! (SPOILERS)
I am sure a few of you are surprised I didn't lead or end with this, but I have a reason for that: as much as I freaking LOVED the opening issue, I actually have an issue I like BETTER, and also, the JLI scans have been sitting around a LOT longer. So, mid-day, you get the boys.
First up, let's enjoy this cover:

It has been a long, long time since John got to even co-headline a book, and I am fucking PSYCHED about what's going to happen. I have no idea what's going to happen, but damnit, I can't wait to find out.
The issue starts with the "page of mystery" wherein something fucks up some Lanterns (as you do) and a ring proceeds to be kind of a sarcastic fuck (as they are):

(I should not be so happy that it's a male/female team, so the murderation is equal opportunity, but I am.)
Then we get tossed to Earth where it turns out Guy's ring alarm is, in fact, Guy yelling at himself:

Let's be clear: this is a scene played for the laugh, but my heartstrings got tugged pretty hard. I mean, it's Guy getting a talking to from HIMSELF about how he needs to be on time. There is something fabulous about the fact that above all, Guy doesn't want to disappoint HIMSELF. It's such a core component of his character, and I feel like this panel is meant to reflect that in a light-hearted way (or they were going for the joke. Whatever.).
Guy's actually headed to a job interview. I'm gonna let the next few pages speak for themselves:

OH MY GOD HIS ADORABLE EMBARRASSED FACE.
Ahem.
What I meant to say is that I love the juxtaposition here. Guy wants to be a normal guy again (and points to continuity that he taught football, but what about his special ed kids?), but he's a known superhero, and the principal is smart enough to know what that could mean to the students, what it could mean for possible harm to the school and its students, and what it means for the whole damned world. I'm still confounded at how the new timeline works, what with Supes only being around five years but still having a pile of Earth Lanterns around, but you know what? I'll take a mucked-up timeline if it means Guy gets to be adored and slightly famous for all his work as a Lantern. He was a butt monkey for a long, long time, and now we're on the THIRD book where he's been taken seriously as a character (The last GLC, Emerald Warriors, and now this GLC). Of course, I'm completely biased.
But, as long as I'm being biased, let's have some love for John. Who does this with his ring:

I have got to give so much credit to Tomasi. In a single page, he shows you John's an architect and explains the way the ring works (he did a similar thing with Guy where he explained the basic set-up of the Corps in a couple of panels). You also get a real sense of John's priorities and his sense of honor, which are really important to his character. Bedard and Tomasi decided Bedard would have Kyle on New Guardians because Bedard wasn't sure he could do right by John in terms of character development, and I will forever love him for that choice. John could use a bit of fleshing out, and I look forward to Tomasi getting the chance to do the kind of work he's done with Guy, Kyle, and a lot of the characters in the Corps.
So, John ends up sticking the slightly crooked development folks in a big green elevator and fucking dropping them to the ground (unharmed) to make a point about his safety features. I'm not sure I'm 100% behind that, but you know what? I was grinning when he did it, so there's that (and I didn't include a scan because I'd rather you see it in full context to draw your own conclusions.) Anyway, Guy and John end up having a fantastic conversation out in the middle of space (as you do):

Again, in a page, Tomasi gives us so much. John and Guy are going to work as a team because they have an understanding of what it means to NEED the ring. Yeah, they need it for different reasons, but they've got the same goal of trying to save the universe. I'm also really happy to finally see a mention of John's military background that isn't just costuming. I think he and Guy will end up doing really well together on a tactical level, as Guy is a plans guy, and John is the man who can see the plan through.
Also, it should be noted that Didio claimed Guy was gonna be a football coach and John was gonna be an architect, and they're in space halfway through the first issue, but who knows, maybe they actually will make it back to Earth. I'm not picky.
And now, my favorite page in the whole issue. I am sure you will guess why:

I have decided I will now enter roomes by shouting "CANNONBALL."
Also, Guy's response to John in that third panel is probably the Guyiest-Guy-Response I have ever seen, and it is PERFECT. As is Salaak's sarcasm.
And finally, this shot:

1. HI GUY YOU ARE SO PRETTY.
2. John, why are you punching out?
3. I see Isamot, and he has full legs, so where the balls is Vath? Seriously, that whole story line needs picked up right now.
That's right, I liked it so much I wrote a ton. And there's one I LIKED MORE. Just you wait.

Gotta give props to this book for having women on the cover, too (Even if Arisa has that disturbing uniboob. I get that she's background and doesn't have as much detail as the focus characters, and the colorist gave her a little definition, but still. They're breasts, not a flesh colored costume.)

Yeah, that is not the best shot of Arisia ever, and the great thing about GLC is that Arisia, Soranik (short hair), and Olanade (cape hat) were all part of the regular cast of the last GLC, so they weren't just shoved on the cover to show off that DC is trying to be more diverse. They're established characters who will (please, please, please) show up eventually.
