The magazine thing, and the brain-damage thing is a very interesting, compelling situation. There's a similar thing that happened IRL fandom, with Richard hammond after his infamous jetcar crash a couple of years ago. he had MASSIVE brain trauma and recovered, though it's taken him about the full two years to do so. Part of his own self-dictated therapy included doing lots and lots of lego.
So that is actually a fairly believable scenario for someone, particularly a smart superhero (who, of course, I know next to nothing about, but I thought I should say something about how cool an idea that is to begin with.)
