All I can say right now is that this was a super-fun first issue. We get a little backstory, some snarkery, and a costume I can use to start arguments on the internet!

The first few pages of the issue set up Kyle's backstory with a quickness:

It's as we've always known it: the Corps is destroyed, and Kyle basically gets a ring tossed at him. The difference between the two origins is that the Guardian (who I think it Ganeth, if memory serves), actually gets a panel to approve of his choice, whereas I don't recall him getting that in the original story (which then caused decades of wank between fandorks). I also love how quickly Kyle takes to the ring. Given that it's willpower plus imagination that makes that thing work, it makes a lot of sense that Kyle can start being a wiseass via illustration immediately.

I was bragging on Tomasi's ability to fill in the blanks quickly, and I want to give props to Bedard for getting through Kyle's origin and explaining the Corps pretty quick. His story isn't as seamless as Tomasi's, but he's got to work with all the different Corps, so there's no real way to make this book as stream-lined as GLC. It'll be a bit of a learning curve to jump on, but I really hope people end up picking it up.

Anyway, we jump to the present day and get introduced to a lady with a costume that I am sure brought on a lot of discussion in certain circles:

(A quick 5 points to Bedard for dropping her old name so any new fans can Wiki who she is more quickly.)

You know what? I really, really love this outfit. Is her rack front and center? Yup. But who gives a fuck. There's a lot of discussion about how much skin is showing being the determiner to whether or not an outfit is ridiculous or not, and I disagree. It's not how much skin but how it's drawn. While you can see half her boobs, you see half her boobs in a (comic book) realistic way in all those shots, and her full-length, half-page splash is all about how she's about to fuck you up and not about how many weird angles she can put in her back. Also, I covet those boots.

Then, Kyle saves a crane from collapsing with fucking awesome ringslinging, and he gets snarked at by a preteen:

Oh, and Bedard slips in a "dude," which always cracks me up, as it's not something I can always hear Kyle saying, but I also feel like it fits in a way that it doesn't bug me.

Anyway, the preteen is a Hal fan for...some reason (a love of head injuries, perhaps?), and as he and Kyle banter, all the Corps rings come flying in:

Kyle, that is some pretty goddamn hair you have. Jesus.

And I love this ending. Understatement, my dear boy, but the perfect kind of understatement.

I really am looking forward to Kyle leading a book. He and Guy co-starred beautifully for a lot of years, but thanks to the new organization, I get Kyle in a book, Guy and John sharing a book, and no real reason to read Hal (who bores me). It's perfect.

Also, timeline muckery continues apace. I am still not sure how it all works, but my Lanterns are alive and well and kicking ass, so I will deal.
