It was sleeting again, and Simon pressed his fingers to the window in an experiment. The window as cold, freezing, in fact, but it was still warmer than the few windows on 'Serenity'. He looked out at the view and wondered when seeing buildings miles away in the distance started to make him antsy.
"You're thinkin'."
"I think you've made me an outlaw."
Mal stepped up behind Simon and put his hands on his shoulders. "Did I, now?"
"Yes."
"How so?"
Simon continued to stare at the horizon, where the buildings blinked and seemed so crowded. "This doesn't seem like open space. We're ten miles from town, and I feel crowded."
"Doesn't make you an outlaw. Makes you fond of open space."
"This used to be open space." Simon tilted his head to brush his cheek against Mal's fingers. "I used to consider open space the park in the middle of the city. I think about it now, and I get nervous, but I can be on 'Serenity' and feel completely at ease. I know I can only go the length of the ship, but it seems like it goes on forever."
Mal smiled into Simon's hair and kissed the back of his head. "That's why I got her. She gave me that feeling, too."
Simon turned away from the window. "You give me that feeling."
Mal wrapped his arms around Simon and pulled him in. "You, too."
