I downloaded a BUNCH of comics from the comixology app the other night, and damn, if it isn't nice to read a bunch of comics in one go. I ended up going with the comixology app because I found some information that Marvel will basically take away your comics if they come up with a reason, and DC was going through comixology anyway, so it made the most sense.
The app is great. It's easy to navigate and easy to buy and easy to download. What's the best of it, I think, is that it gives you the option of removing comics from your iPad collection, but you can download them again later if you want to read them again. Basically, it's good content management. If you like to re-read your comics on occasion but don't need all of them front and center, you can rearrange as you choose.
My one irk is that some of the comics being offered weren't full runs. This isn't comixology's fault. This is DC and Marvel (and possibly the other companies; what I looked at from the other companies were full runs as far as I could tell) having to make good with--as I understand it--deals they have with brick and mortar stores. This means that as much as I'd like to own "Welcome to Tranquility" on my iPad, I can't get it because only the first 10 issues (of 12) are offered.
But it's a minor inconvenience for me because I did get a bunch of stuff I haven't read. Like the first 12 issues of "Power Girl" (Winick picked it up after, and I'd rather jam spikes into my foot then read him again). I also got the first volume of "Criminal" by Brubaker, and I got "Kingdom Come" because I swear I had the trade, but it seems to have vanished.
What I'm really looking forward to is getting copies of comics I would have bought in trade. When we moved, I sold most of my collection, so I don't have my back issues anymore, and comixology has the first arc of "Invincible Iron Man" under Fraction and other stuff I've read and loved but haven't bought in trade yet. I got the first 20 issues of "Immortal Iron Fist," which I haven't read since I first picked it up, and damn if that story isn't just as good the second time around.
So, yes, the iPad and I are getting along. And, yes, I find reading comics on it to be pretty awesome, and yes, I look forward to not having to pack even more books the next time we move. And, yes, I am aware this makes me a heretic to some people. And I don't care.
