It's just a camoflage of really ugly shirts and behavior that doesn't let us forget that he is supposed to be retired and sensible and also old distracting us from the fact that he appears 20 years younger in the flashbacks.
I know this academically, but it is still a surprisingly effective technique.
I think more Henryfic could make for a very good exploration of his character that the show is not ready to give us. I'm just ready for the sex (yet).
