Love in Three Acts

Hal only says it before they’re about to go into a big fight.
“I love you, you know,” he’ll say quietly, the warmth of his breath making Roy’s ear itch.
“I know,” Roy will always respond. “Back at you.”
Afterwards, when the injuries are accounted and the adrenaline wears off, Hal pulls Roy close in bed and kisses him slowly. “Sure you’re okay?” Always asked whether or not Roy’s been injured.
“I’m all right,” Roy will always tell him, busted up or not. “Just want to sleep until the world ends.”
“Give it a week.”
And Roy will always smile.

Roy says it every morning before Hal leaves for work. “Love you,” he’ll say into the goodbye kiss.
“Back at you,” Hal will reply. “See you when I get home.”
“Don’t explode.”
Even if they’re fighting and haven’t said a word since the night before, Roy will always kiss him goodbye. It’s won Roy more arguments than he knows, and Hal has no plans to tell him.
“Sorry,” he’ll say after the kiss and before he walks out the door.
“Accepted,” Roy always says. “Don’t explode.”
And Hal will smile as he shuts the door behind him. “Do my best.”

They always say it to Lian. Until she’s ten, she smiles and says it back.
“Love you, too!” And then she’ll want a hug.
After she turns ten, she shies away. She gets embarrassed and pretends not to know Roy and Hal if they tell her they love her in public.
“Love you, kiddo.”
“Yeah, okay,” and then she’ll turn away, blushing and roll her eyes to show she’s cool.
But sometimes she sits with them on the couch and watches a movie. “Love you,” she says as she goes to bed.
“Love you,” they say and take the victory.
