Random Fannish Thought of the Day

Anyone else remember the whole "Woke Up Gay" thing fandom went through years ago [my brain says late 90s, and I think it's right on this one]?
I remember reading probably 20 or 30 stories that all had the same basic idea. Character X wakes up gay and flounces about like the utmost queen. They were meant to be a very, very obvious parody and usually included leather pants.
I miss them, now that I think of them again, because they did a great job of showing the ridiculousness of having a character suddenly be gay because of that one certain person. Looking back I see an attempt by writers to try and stamp out the stereotypes of the slash genre by having some fun with them. It didn't work--there are still plenty of "OMG! GAY NOW!" stories around--but I like to think it made better writers of a few of us.
