Let me be very clear on this
Jun. 16th, 2009 09:55 pmSomeone at NPR questions if Pixar is sexist.
Short answer: No.
Long answer:Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Pixar routinely showcases smart, capable, interesting characters of varying gender identities and backgrounds. Pixar also tells wonderful stories about adventure and love and the belief in the human spirit. I find, every time I leave a Pixar film, that I'm simply happy that they keep making amazing, touching, emotionally satisfying movies about people in situations and not movies about girls or boys in situations. Until I saw this article, it didn't occur to me that all of Pixar's protagonists had been male. I don't see this as a sign that sexism is so rampant that I no longer see it; I see it as a sign that Pixar makes amazing, beautiful, emotionally satisfying movies that speak to me as a person and not just as a thing with a vagina between my legs.
Let me end with this:
The author of the article titled it, "Dear Pixar, From all the Girls with Band-Aids on their Knees" and bemoaned the fact that an upcoming Pixar film will have a female protagonist but it will be "another princess". Ma'am, if you want sexism out of film, how about you remove it from your writing first?
