Three days after his divorce is final, Eliot meets Bobby at a less-than-reputable jazz bar. Twenty minutes after first name introductions, Eliot’s pinned against the men’s room wall with Bobby’s hands up his shirt. When he tries to talk, Bobby slides his tongue into Eliot’s mouth, and Eliot forgets what he’s going to say. After he gets off and gets Bobby off, they stand toe-to-toe and stare at each other.
“I…ah…I…” Bobby closes his mouth and stares at Eliot.
Eliot says the first thing that comes to mind. “I just got divorced.”
“Ah.” Bobby seems to think that that’s all he needs to say.
“Okay.” Eliot suddenly realizes that his pants are still undone. He zips them and looks up in surprise when Bobby brushes his fingers out of the way and slips the button through the hole for him. “Thanks.”
“You’re welcome.” Bobby rocks back on his heels and stares at the floor. “Thanks. For this.” He scratches the back of his neck and looks at Eliot again. “I…” He trails off again.
Eliot throws out a question to cut the silence. “What’s your last name?” He notes that Bobby doesn’t seem uncomfortable like the men Eliot used to ask before Kathy and the kids.
“Goren. I’m Bobby Goren. Well, Robert, actually. Robert Goren.”
Eliot knows the name, and he has to remember to breathe when he realizes where he knows it from. “Major Case.” He thinks that the deer eyes Bobby’s sporting probably match his own. “Stabler. Sex Crimes.”
“Oh.” Bobby jams his hands into his pockets and takes a step back. “Okay.”
“Do you speak in full sentences?” Eliot’s not pissed, just amazed that there’s a cop in the city who doesn’t speak more than a half-dozen words at a time.
“Usually. I ramble. Drives my partner nuts.”
“I never would have guessed.” Eliot smiles and jerks his head towards the door. Bobby nods before he can ask the question. Cops, even after an accidental fuck, are still cops. They’ll back each other anywhere.
