No ‘She’
By Perpetual Motion

“Who is she?” Olivia blurted the question out as she and Eliot sat over lunch in a small diner three blocks from the station. It wasn’t their usual place to eat, which meant their weren’t the usual people to eavesdrop, so she felt safe asking the question.

Eliot didn’t look up from his sandwich. “Who?”

“Don’t play dumb, Eliot. You’ve been grinning like an idiot all week. Valentine’s Day is the day after tomorrow. Last year at this time you were ready to brain the next courier that dropped flowers off at the station because your divorce had just wrapped up. You haven’t threatened any messengers this week, and you’ve been *happy*. Who is she?” Olivia waited impatiently for Eliot to answer.

“There’s no ‘she’, Liv.”

“Oh, come *on*.” Olivia pointed an accusing finger at Eliot. “You were looking up florists yesterday when we were waiting to hear from the lab. I saw the phone book.”

“There is no ‘she’.”

“Munch said you made reservations at some swanky place in middle Manhattan while we were on that stake out last week.”

“Munch needs to learn to keep his mouth shut.”

“Eliot, just fess up already.”

Eliot laughed and raised his hands in surrender. “If I had a mysterious ‘she’ to confess, I would, Liv, but I don’t.”

Olivia was not convinced. “Who are all the plans for?”

Eliot shrugged. “Maybe I’m going to sweep you off your feet.”

Olivia laughed. “No. Not ever.” She was glad when Eliot laughed with her. The divorce had run him into the ground. Kathy, in a fit of anger, had accused Olivia of sleeping with him. Olivia had been so shocked at the accusation that she’d laughed. Eliot hadn’t made a sound, then. “Who *are* you planning to romance?” Eliot smiled but said nothing. “Eliot, come on. Give me free amusement.”

“There is no ‘she’, Liv. I promise.”

Something about the way Eliot kept insisting he wasn’t seeing anyone set off the investigative bells in Olivia’s head. She took a bite of her sandwich and thought about their conversation. Eliot wasn’t lying. Eliot, outside of interrogation, wasn’t a particularly good liar. He could do it for the job, but in his personal life, he could never find the point. So, Eliot wasn’t lying. There wasn’t any ‘she’. The realization hit Olivia, and she grinned at Eliot while nodding. His immediate response was to check his tie for a stain.

“What?”

“There is no ‘she’.”

Eliot rolled his eyes. “Liv, are you really going to-“

“What about a he?” Olivia watched Eliot snap his mouth shut. “Ah ha.” She smiled at him, this one less gleeful, more friendly. “Anyone I know?” She held in her giggle at Eliot’s blush.

“Yeah.” Eliot suddenly found his sandwich amazingly fascinating.

Olivia let Eliot stare at his sandwich for a few seconds. “Who is it?” She pitched her voice low. It was one thing to tease Eliot about a woman he hadn’t ‘fessed up to; it was entirely another to have an open conversation about a man he was seeing when their badges were in plain sight.

“It’s-“ Eliot cut off as the waitress came by with the check. He went for it, but Olivia snatched it off the table. He grinned at her. “You already like him.”

“That’s not helpful in figuring out who he is.” Olivia laid enough money on the table to cover the check and a good tip. She and Eliot stood up at the same time. She waited until they were outside before nudging him in the ribs. “You never told me who he was.”

Eliot shrugged. “And if I do, you lose a perfectly good mystery to solve.”

“That’s just *mean*.” Olivia waited for Eliot to say something, but he just smiled at her and kept walking. She considered badgering him, but she knew she wouldn’t get much out of him before they got back to their desks. She let it lie as they went into the station and up the stairs.

“Detective Stabler,” the PAA at the desk handed Eliot a pink note. “Dr. Huang called. He said to tell you that he’s running late for your meeting.”

Eliot took the note and pocketed it. “Thanks.”

Olivia dropped her scarf onto her desk and stared working the fastenings on her coat. “We had a meeting with George?”

“I did.” Eliot unwound his own scarf.

“Why would-“ and it clicked. Olivia gave Eliot an appraising look before giving him one sharp nod. “He’s a nice guy.”

Eliot smiled. “He’s okay.”
