Winner’s Circle

The board was balanced on his knees, and Spencer was resting his head on Jason’s shoulder when Jason finally lost a game of chess. He looked at Spencer, ready for some hard-earned gloating, but all he got was a soft smile and Spencer’s long fingers plucking up his king.

“Checkmate.” Spencer pressed his face into Jason’s shoulder and dropped the king into Jason’s palm.

Jason curled his fingers around the king, kissed Spencer’s temple, and moved the board onto the bedside table. “Congratulations.”

“Thank you.” Spencer smiled again.

Jason smiled back at him and settled them in for the night.
