And then one day, there are pills.
Eames discovers them quite by accident. She’s got a splitting headache, and she’s out of aspirin, so she tries Bobby’s side of the desk. He has two bottles of aspirin. One marked with a big black X. She grabs and opens it without a thought, more concerned about the pain slamming behind her eyes than she is about the markings on the bottle. Except that the pills that fall into her hand aren’t aspirin. They’re not even close. Eames stares at the pills in her hand and knows what they are with a clarity that tells her that she’s been expecting this for a good long while. She dumps the pills back into the bottle, snaps on the lid again, and reaches for the bottle of actual aspirin. She swallows them dry and straightens up as Bobby walks across the room, a file in his hand, and his eyebrows knitted together at the sight of her.
“You okay?”
“Headache.” She works her neck back and forth a few times, but it doesn’t pop. “What have you got?” He starts telling her, flipping open the file and laying it on the desk for her to see, but she doesn’t miss the way he looks from her to the drawer just once. Eames picks up a pen, turns her non-writing hand palm up, and draws an X. She doesn’t look away when he stares at her, searching her face for an answer or a question or a condemnation. She asks one question. “Deakins?”
“Covered.”
“Okay.” If Deakins knows, then the station shrink knows, and Bobby’s been cleared for duty as officially as he possibly can be. Eames looked away from Bobby and back at the file. “What’d you say we had here?” She doesn’t miss the way Bobby’s shoulders drop from their defensive position, or the relief that slides across his face when he doesn’t think she’s really paying attention to him anymore. Eames doesn’t call him on it; she doesn’t even look at him again. She just waits for him to clear his throat and start in on his theory. The pills were an inevitability. Nothing’s actually changed for her.
