A dash of original fic
Jun. 15th, 2006 09:43 amI've got a little more than what's here, but I'm not sure what's going to happen next, so you get the piece that can stand independent.
Every time he said something, there was mumbling. Not just a few words here and there, but a medium-volume buzzing that seemed to center around a group of students near the middle of the auditorium. Leonard raised his eyebrows to the general area, and asked them, “Anything you’d like to share with the class?” The whole group went completely silent. Leonard nodded once. “That’s what I thought.”
“Sir,” Matt, Leonard’s assistant, was at Leonard’s elbow, his eyebrows furrowing together in a way that could only mean Leonard had just been insulting.
Leonard covered the microphone with his hand. “What is it?”
“Those are the exchange students. They’re translating for their parents.” Matt took a half-step back as Leonard glared at him.
“What?”
“Exchange students. Translating.”
Leonard glanced back towards the audience. Everyone was quiet and obviously curious as to what was being said at the lecturn. “Shit.” He looked back to Matt. “I faux paux-ed.”
“It’s not actually a verb, but yes, you did.”
“Free coffee mugs and twenty-five dollar bookstore vouchers.”
Matt scribbled the instructions on the inside of his hand. “I’ll get it done.”
“Good.” Leonard took his hand off the microphone and nodded to the assembled audience. “My apologies, everyone. My assistant just needed to inform me that I’m an idiot.” The laughter was half-polite and half-amused, just the mix Leonard needed to finish off his speech. “If you’ll bear with me for a few more minutes, we’ll wrap it up here, and you can move on to the next part of your campus tour.”
