perpetual_motion: hang yourself please (FLEEEEEE)
So, I was on the Wayback Machine for an unrelated bit of finding [thank you, [livejournal.com profile] misura, you saved my brain], and I decided to see if my old, old website was archived.

It is! Neat! What did I used to write...oh, holy shit.

Oh, it's bed. I defended a Mary Sue, people. No, it was not a case of, "No, really, it's just an OFC, not a Sue"; it was a damned Sue. And I defended it. So, apparently, the powers of denial in a 15-year-old fangirl were once mine. Go me?

EDIT: And I said fanfiction.net was a wonderful place for fic. I'm gonna go die now.

Ed Benes is a comic book artist. He draws a lot of stuff for DC. He and I have had a few quibbles in the past, most notably when he repeatedly put Black Canary in a thong, and his insistence on putting other women in thongs and making Vixen white. But I'm not reading anything with Benes on art lately, so these pictures have been remembered but not front and center.

And then I read Titans: Blackest Night, #1, and I realized exactly why Benes's art makes so many people twitch, and why I'm now in that list.

Look at this art from the 90s. That's Rouge and Pyslocke from the X-Men. Notice the ridiculously long legs, the tiny waists, and the huge boobs.

An example of some of Benes's recent work. Notice the ridiculously long legs, the tiny waist. Raven's breasts aren't as big as Rogue's, but it's still got the legs and waist batshittery going on.

Now that you've seen these, check out this page of Hawk and Dove in "Titans: Blackest Night". The legs aren't as outrageously long, and the waists aren't as outrageously tiny, but it's the same basic look as the 90s art. Oh! And he did the pointed-toe thing! I just realized! Look at Hawk's [little black dress] feet. She's in heels. Now look at Dove's [pants] feet. I can't tell what she's wearing, exactly, but in the next to last panel, it looks like it's maybe supposed to be some kind of boot. Whatever it is, she shouldn't be en pointe. And, really, neither should Hawk. This is some Rob Liefeld shit here, folks. [And, of course, now I can't find a good shot of Liefeld's terrible, terrible feet design.]

I really wish I could find the big fight scene pages, because there's a panel of the two of them in full costume, and you can see them head-to-toe and it showcases exactly how out-dated and rather ugly the art really is.

But, hey, at least I did find the completely inappropriate ass shot for which Benes is becoming famous. I'm so glad Benes could find a place during a serious, sad conversation about Terra betraying the Titans and dying in the process that Benes could make sure we knew the exact curve of Starfire's ass.
