Okay, so all my attempts at reviews so far have been deleted. And while I just want to write, "Go fuckin' rent them!", I don't think it'll totally work. So, list time it is.
Why should you see this movie?
1. Peter Dinklage is the shit.
2. Bobby Cannavale is the shit.
3. Patricia Clarkson is the shit.
4. Michelle Williams [surprisingly, for me] is the shit.
5. The script is excellent, and put into excellent hands.
6. The film is just plain *pretty* scenery-wise.
7. People's reactions to Fin [Peter Dinklage, a dwarf], are very realistic.
8. The friendship between Fin, Joe [Bobby Cannavale], and Olivia [Patricia Clarkson] is very realistic.
9. Fin having to dodge Olvia's massive SUV not once, but *twice*, is one of the funniest things every recorded on film.
10. The pot scene with the train movie is also one of the funniest things ever recorded on film.
11. The emotion and reactions in this film are very real.
12. Stephen Trask, who wrote all the music and lyrics for "Hedwig and the Angry Inch", wrote the score. It rocks.
Why see this movie?
1. Gus Van Sant understands that high school is neither easy or easily understood.
2. It blames no one in particular for the fact that kids sometimes shoot other kids.
3. The bloodshed is in no way gratuitous.
4. The emotional wallop from the movie is unexpected but necessary.
5. You get sucked in without even realizing it.
6. Every person who plays a student *is* a student. No 30-year-olds who shave twice a day.
7. You see a high school that doesn't even seem to worry about shootings.
8. You see more problems than just a couple of guys blowing shit up.
9. The boys who play the killers are not demonized. They're just confused and teenagers, and you see that that can lead to bad shit.
10. The parents of the kids who go on the spree are not overly neglectful or horrible people with fangs.
11. There is no ulterior message about violence in video games or music. Sure, the kid plays a violent video game, but he also plays "Moonlight Sonata".
12. You see teenagers as teenagers.
Go fuckin' rent them.
