A promise:

I promise, that between now and November 1 [that'd be the beginning of NaNo], I'm going to finish and post as much fic as possible between other duties.
I also promise to start right now with a shiny "Sky Captain" ficlet. Because nothing fits amongst a chat conversation with the guy you're seeing and the girl you pissed off because you're dating a guy she likes like slash.
When he drops Polly off in New York, she gives him flirty eyes that he ignores. She tries to kiss his cheek, and he ducks away. "Have to get back. Repairs, you know." He gives her a quick smile and hurries back to his plane. He doesn't have to look back to see the disappointment on her face. He saw it enough times the last time they tried to be the perfect adventure-seeking couple.
When he lands on base, he doesn't even have to ask. His usual flight tech points him towards what's left of Dex's hanger, and he's headed in that direction as soon as his feet his solid ground. He finds Dex bent over something that is obviously the first half of a gadget, and he leans over to see. "What's that?"
Dex doesn't respond to Joe's presense behind him. He'll jump sometimes when other people interrupt his concentration, but he's never jumped when Joe's stepped up behind him.
Joe taps Dex on the back of the head. "Hey, in there. What is that?"
"I don't know yet." Dex twists a wire three times, then untwists it twice. He holds up the mess of wire and metal to get a clearer look at it. "Maybe something explosive."
"How much further do you have to go on that part?" Joe leans in so his cheek is just brushing Dex's hair.
Dex puts the part down and wipes his hands on his coveralls. He turns, and his shoulder bumps Joe in the chest. "I could probably use a break if you need me for something else, Cap'n."
Joe grins just a little and steps aside to let Dex preceed him. He's a sucker for the man's butt in his coveralls. "Let's go talk in my office."
