Prompt: perfect aim
Summary: Wherein Connor, Ollie, and Roy are snobs.

Disclaimer: Complete lies. I lay claim to absolutely nothing.

“Farther,” Roy says and cocks his bow.

Hal makes the construct push farther out. “There?”

“It’s a start.”

The arrow flies and lands dead center. Next to Roy, Ollie scoffs. “Luck.”

“Sure it is.” Roy steps back so Ollie can take his stance. “Or maybe my eyesight’s just better.”

Ollie’s arrow lands center on his own target. “You were saying?”

“Both of you suck,” Mia announces and pushes Ollie out of the way. “Ten more yards,” she instructs Hal. Hal obliges. Mia lifts her crossbow.

“Whoa! Stop!” It is, surprisingly, Connor who speaks up. “We said bows only!”

“This is a bow.”

“No, it’s not,” Ollie, Roy, and Connor say simultaneously. Hal laughs.

“A bow shoots arrows,” Mia argues. “Therefore, this is a bow.”

“Like hell.” Roy takes the crossbow from her hand and holds it above his head. “Either you shoot with a real bow, or you forfeit your turn.”

Mia tries, ineffectually, to grab her crossbow from Roy. “It’s not my fault,” she jumps for the crossbow when Roy dangles it just out of reach, “that you guys are scared of technology.”

“It’s not technology,” Connor says with a grimace. “It’s cheating. It takes away the skill you’re supposed to learn on a bow.”

“Ollie uses it,” Mia tries.

“I’ve tried it,” Ollie counters. “Connor’s right; it takes away skill and leaves an easy answer.”

“Big talk from a guy who won’t use it.”

“She has a point,” Hal interjects. He raises his eyebrows at the triple-glare. “None of you like it, but not one of you regularly use it.”

There’s a pause. Ollie, Connor, and Roy all share a look. Mia taps her foot impatiently. Roy lowers his arm and holds out the crossbow to Hal. “Take a shot,” he says.

“Hal doesn’t know how to use a crossbow,” Mia says.

“Then he can prove the point,” Roy responds. “Point and shoot," he says to Hal. “Aim for the middle.”

“Thanks,” Hal says sarcastically. “That much I do know.” He takes the crossbow from Roy and raises it at the target. He hears Mia shift to watch and lets the arrow fly.

It lands center. Mia rolls her eyes. “Luck.”

“Exactly,” says Ollie. “The point today is to improve your accuracy with a bow that requires skill. That thing,” he waves dismissively at the crossbow, “is just something that makes you look good.”

“Fine.” Mia un-shoulders her bow, nocks her arrow, and splits Hal’s arrow in half. “Ta-da.”

Ollie grins. Connor tugs at Mia’s ponytail. Roy leans against Hal. Hal whispers in Roy’s ear, “Are we going to tell her about my expert target certifications from the Air Force?”

“No. She won’t learn anything that way.”

Hal chuckles and pulls in the targets. “Okay, everyone, get your arrows and prep for the next round.”

Author's Note the second: I know cross bows require more skill than 'point and shoot', but you try to tell the boys that. :)
