The home was a good one. It was well-kept, and the staff seemed genuinely friendly. Ron followed Bobby down the corridor with a confidence that wasn’t quite real. When they reached the locked doors to the special wing, Ron touched Bobby’s sleeve. “Are you sure?”
“I want you to meet her.” Bobby rotated his wrist and touched Ron’s hand with his fingertips. “You can back out, if you want. I’ll understand.”
Ron knew better than to believe that. Bobby hated, more than nearly anything, to be left alone when he asked for companionship. Bobby would accept his decision if Ron chickened out, but he wouldn’t actually understand it. Or forgive it. “I don’t want to back out. I want to meet her.”
“She might be having an off day.” Bobby’s fingers fluttered lightly and tapped against Ron’s hand.
Ron grabbed Bobby’s fingers and squeezed once. “So, she’ll have an off day. We’ll come back again.” Ron breathed a sigh of relief when Bobby smiled.
“Okay. Yeah.” Bobby tapped the key code for the door and pulled it open on the buzz.
The hall for the special wing was decorated with the same wreaths and garlands as the rest of the home, but everything looked somehow shabbier and run down. Ron tried not to think about the shabbiness as he followed Bobby into a private room. The room was decorated differently than the hall. The wreath on the wall looked new, and the small tree on the dresser was a well-made fake. Ron knew without asking that Bobby had brought them in.
“Mom, hi.” Bobby sat next to the bed and smiled at his mother. “How are you?”
“I’m just fine, Bobby.” Mrs. Goren turned her head and looked straight at Ron. “You must be Ron Carver. Bobby said he’d be bringing you by.”
Ron took the hand that Mrs. Goren held out to him and gave it a gentle squeeze. She was a small woman with very delicate features, and she looked like she might break if held too tightly. Ron wondered how someone as large as Bobby had come from someone as small as her. “It’s nice to meet you, ma’am. How are you feeling today?” Ron saw a flash of Bobby in the way Mrs. Goren paused to think before answering.
“I’m evening out. The doctor started me on a new combination of medication and vitamins a few weeks ago. I think my body’s finally decided to adjust to it.”
“Are you still dizzy?” Bobby asked with he rearranged the stack of books on the nightstand.
“No dizziness,” Mrs. Goren leaned over and slapped the backs of Bobby’s hands with her fingers. “Stop reorganizing my system. I have those books stacked in order of preferred taste.”
Ron smiled when Bobby leaned away from the table and wrapped both of his hands around the bedrail. Ron understood, as he sat in silence and watched them talk, how much Bobby adored and mourned his mother. She was sharp, easily keeping up with Bobby’s twists in conversation and keeping him interested. Bobby as a boy had had a built-in teacher at home who had loved to challenge him. Ron couldn’t even imagine what Bobby had felt like when he’d realized that his mother wouldn’t always be able to keep up with him. Just thinking about it made something twinge in Ron.
“…not even listening.” Mrs. Goren was smiling at Ron. “Are you?”
Ron came back into the room on an intellectual level. “Of course not,” his tone was dry. “I’m a lawyer.
Mrs. Goren burst out laughing. “You’re a wonderful man, Ron. I can tell. With the exception of Bobby’s father, I was always a good judge of character on my good days.”
“Thank you.” Ron looked at Bobby and felt his insides warm at the look Bobby had on his face. He looked like he’d just won a lifetime supply of Encyclopedia Britannica. Ron just smiled at him and started grilling Mrs. Goren on Bobby’s childhood.
