[livejournal.com profile] fandom_scruples wants to throw us all in prison. This is from the LJ:

To those who might not know it, Child Online Protection Act (COPA) was passed on Oct. 21, 1998. The Act makes it a federal crime to use the World Wide Web to distribute "for commercial purposes" material considered "harmful to minors," with penalties of up to $150,000 for each day of violation and up to six months in prison.

While I admire what they're doing in terms of trying to keep kids from seeing obscene material, I have to make a face at them.

Fan fiction isn't done "for commercial purposes". That implies we get paid. Which we don't. Or that we charge people to read our fic. Which we don't. If the websites they want to report are fic websites, do they really have a case?

Also, I don't trust anyone not willing to take a few on the chin for the cause, and they have no comment section. It's all a bit hinky to me.

*sees 10-ft pole sticking out of [livejournal.com profile] fandom_scruples ass, and pulls hard* Nope, it's stuck in there good. No use trying.

Alright, so I really shouldn't have said that without at least going to the journal, but really, I trust your judgement and personally, I think they should be a little more concerned about porn first. Words will do less damage. Really, they will. And I could understand if they had a problem with fic that didn't have warnings, but if the warning is there, get a grip on reality. Please.
