“Here, Ray, drink this.” Fraser held a cup of something hot under Ray’s nose.
Ray took the cup and sniffed at it. It didn’t smell weird, but that didn’t mean anything where Benny was concerned. “What is it?”
“Elderberry tea, Ray. It will help your body recover from being in the lake.”
“You got me out of there, I’m all warm and toasty; what more do I need?”
“Well, Ray, Lake Michigan has a number of pollutants which can-“
“Benny?”
“Yes, Ray?”
“You can stop.”
“Of course, Ray.” Fraser’s face was completely innocent as he put away the tea and honey and rinsed the spoon in the sink.
Ray watched him work and sipped at his tea. It didn’t taste terrible. He was impressed. He figured any tea Benny would have would be made of tree bark or moose droppings or something just as freaky. “Hey, Benny?”
“Yes, Ray?”
“Why’d you bring me here?”
Fraser turned from the sink, his confused face firmly in place. “Pardon me, Ray?”
“I’ve got a house full of people at home waiting to tuck me under the covers and feed me soup. Why bring me to your place?”
“I didn’t think you were quite up to the challenge of recuperating in front of your family, Ray.”
Ray snorted and nearly inhaled tea up his nose. “You’re a terrible liar.”
Fraser gave Ray a quick, apologetic smile. “So you always tell me.”
Ray watched Benny work a crease into the dishtowel that he was holding in his hands. “It’s Frannie, isn’t it?”
“Hmmm?” Fraser’s head snapped up. “Francesca is a lovely woman, Ray. She seems to genuinely care about your well-being for all of her noisy complaints.”
“And she’s got a thing for you, and it makes you nervous.” Ray took another sip of his tea. It really wasn’t horrible.
“Francesca is…” Fraser trailed off, obviously searching for the right word. “She’s very direct. It’s an admirable trait to be found in any person, but I find her to be…overwhelming.”
“Part of the family charm.” Ray shrugged the blanket off of his shoulders and couldn’t help but grin when Benny immediately rushed over and resettled it. “I’m getting warm, Benny.”
“Oh, of course. I’m sorry, Ray.” Fraser rearranged the blanket again so that it was back in its previous position.
Ray shook his head and poked a finger into Benny’s chest. “You’re crazy.”
“So you tell me, Ray.”
“And you’re still a terrible liar.”
“I don’t understand, Ray.”
Ray moved his finger from Benny’s chest and pointed it at his face. “Don’t play dumb, Benny. I know your ‘I’m really just a weird Canadian’ face and your ‘I’m playing a weird Canadian’ face, and that’s the second one. What aren’t you telling me?” Benny tried to step back, but Ray grabbed his wrist and hung on. “What’s going on?”
“I-I can’t tell you, Ray.”
“Why not?”
“Because it’s private.”
“We’re friends, Benny. You’re supposed to tell me the private stuff.”
Fraser tried to get his wrist free, but Ray held on tightly. He could have broken the grip, but he was afraid that Ray was still weak from being in the lake. “You won’t like it, Ray.”
“I don’t like a lot of stuff, Benny.”
“You won’t like *me*, Ray.”
“What could your happy, boy scout self do to make me not like you?” And then Ray was being kissed very, very softly. Ray was so surprised that both of his hands opened. Benny’s wrist was freed, but so was the mug of tea. It hit the floor with a dull cracking sound and Ray felt Benny jerk out of the kiss.
“Oh, Ray, I’m…” Fraser trailed off, obviously at a loss for what to do. “I’m afraid that I don’t know the procedure for this sort of incident.” Fraser’s face screwed up in confusion when Ray started to laugh. “Ray, are you all right?”
Ray laughed harder and nearly fell out of his chair. “’Procedure’, Benny? You kiss me out of *nowhere*, and you’re worried about ‘procedure’? That’s Canadian, even for you.”
“But, I don’t-“ Before Fraser could finish the sentence, Ray stood up, dropped the blanket to the floor, and kissed him. When Ray pulled away, Fraser had the slightly dazed look he got when something went in a direction he wasn’t expecting. “Oh.”
“Yeah.”
Fraser smiled softly and eased Ray back into his seat. “You need rest.”
“I’m fine, Benny.”
“While you may feel fine, Ray, you were underwater for a period of time that could cause physical problems that have not yet-“
“Benny?”
“Yes, Ray?”
“Shut up, would you?”
“Of course.” Fraser lapsed into silence.
Ray reached out, grabbed Benny’s hand, and pulled him down into the seat next to him. They sat in silence while the blanket soaked up Ray’s spilled tea.
