“You like him.”
Monty looked up from where he was making dinner and gave Nathanial a confused look. “Like who?”
“Don’t be obtuse.” Nathanial did not look amused. “You like Detective Arlette.”
“Well, sure, what’s not to like? I mean, sure, he’s a Yank, but that just makes for more humourous fodder.” Monty grinned at Nathanial. “What’s the matter? Jealous of the Yank and his pretty blue eyes?”
“Hardly.” Nathanial stood behind Monty and slid his hands onto Monty’s hips. “I don’t care one bit about his eyes, pretty or not. I’m more concerned with the amount of attention you seem to be giving him. It could be seen as overly-friendly.” Nathanial pressed his nose into Monty’s hair. “I’d hate to think that two of my inspectors were shagging right under my nose.”
Monty laughed and turned his head so that Nathanial could kiss the side of his forehead. “Two inspectors can’t share a dirty joke without your nose noticing. If you’ve any shagging inspectors, they’re better at hiding information than Carol when she’s angry.”
Nathanial chuckled into Monty’s hair and lifted a hand to push it off of his face. “So, the vandalizing of a public bus with ‘Go Home Yank Cop’ was just in good fun?”
“Yes.”
“No ulterior motives intended?”
“I don’t vandalize buses to flirt with co-workers.” Monty turned around fully and took a step forward to get away from the stove. “If you’ll recall, I stole your coffee cup to flirt with you.”
“How many did you end up taking before I figured it out?”
“That’s a question for the ages.” Monty leaned up and kissed Nathanial. “So, is this interrogation closed?”
Nathanial returned the kiss. “I suppose.”
“Then, we can have dinner?”
“Of course.”
“And dessert?”
“You actually remembered to buy dessert?”
Monty grinned. “I remembered to pick up a can of whipped cream.”
“Wonderful.”
