“I think,” Larry spoke very slowly, as if the words were coming to him one at a time, “that I may have pushed you a bit too far.”
Charlie, head on Larry’s chest, fingers playing around Larry’s hip, lifted his head to look Larry in the eyes. “Pushed me too far?”
“Yes.” Larry pressed his fingertips against Charlie’s hairline and watched the way the curls shifted around his hand. “Perhaps if I hadn’t been so adamant in pushing you towards Amita, you wouldn’t have felt the need to stay closer to me.”
“For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.”
Larry pursed his lips and let his hand drop from Charlie’s face. “It’s really unfair to use physics on me.”
“But you understand physics, and the way you get people to see your reasoning, is to put it in a context they understand.” Charlie shook his head to toss his hair out of his eyes. “You pushed me towards Amita. I pushed back towards you. I knew there was a reason for your pushing, but I didn’t think that this,” he waved a hand to encompass himself, Larry, and the thoroughly messed-up bed, “was the reason.”
“It wasn’t precisely. At least, not at the start. I just thought that you didn’t notice her affections towards you. I knew you admired her, liked her, enjoyed her company, but I thought, perhaps, that you hadn’t figured out the last part.”
“The last part?”
“Less scientific people call it lust.” Larry’s grin was teasing. “I’m sure there’s an equation for it that would make sense to you.”
Charlie thumped his knuckles against Larry’s hip in mild rebuke. “Funny.” He slid up the bed a few inches and took over the other half of Larry’s pillow. “I noticed her because you kept pointing her out to me. I think, if you hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t have noticed at all.” He gave a shrug in response to the incredulous look on Larry’s face. “All your pushing did was make me curious as to *why* you were pushing. I kept wondering what was so wonderful about her that made you and Don and Dad nudge me in her direction. I can appreciate that she’s smart and interesting and beautiful, but I just don’t have any idea what I’m supposed to do with that information.”
“You were supposed to date her.”
“She’s too solvable.”
Larry’s brow furrowed at the statement. “Are we talking mathematically solvable, chemistry solvable, or just overall solvable?”
“Overall solvable, I think.” Charlie scratched low on his stomach where the semen had dried. “She’s very predictable. Two plus two is four, and there’s no unknown to the equation. Amita will always be smart, beautiful, and interesting, but she won’t have an unknown. There won’t be any ‘x’ to solve. She’s just exactly who she is.”
“Aren’t we all exactly who we are?” Larry watched Charlie think and curled his hand into a fist to keep from stroking down his forehead and over his nose.
“We are who we are, but some people have more variables than others.” Charlie turned his head to look at Larry. “You have variables. I never really know what you’re going to do next, or say next, or even remember next. Amita doesn’t have that. She’s very finite in her reactions. You’re not.”
“So I won out to youth and beauty and brains because I’m more of an equation for you.”
“You won out because you’re more interesting. And because you tried to push me away. I couldn’t have predicted that. I don’t think Amita would have pushed me away.”
“No, I don’t suppose she would have.” Larry gave in, uncurled his hand, and placed it flat on Charlie’s stomach. “Next time, perhaps, I’ll completely ignore whoever lines up to woo you.”
“An object in motion stays in motion until another object causes it to stop.” Charlie curled around Larry and rested his forehead against Larry’s. “Stop.”
Larry smiled at Charlie. “I suppose I could be convinced.”
